Glaucoma is a complex condition, generally characterized by increased intraocular pressure (IOP). It results in progressive damage to the optic nerve and associated loss of vision.
Glaucoma surgery aims to reduce IOP and preserve your eyesight in one of two broad ways:
- By facilitating better drainage of ocular fluid called aqueous.
- By reducing secretion of ocular fluid / aqueous inside the eye
At The Eye Center-Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah & Associates in Karachi, Pakistan, we offer a wide range of specialized surgical options for glaucoma to best address each patient’s particular needs, specific glaucoma type and stage of disease.
Our glaucoma procedures include:
- Trabeculectomy – an established surgical technique that remains the method of choice for many cases and different glaucoma types. This is a procedure where a small part of tissue or tubing is surgically excised, thereby creating a new drainage channel or easier flow and reducing intraocular pressure/ IOP.
- Glaucoma Drainage Devices or Glaucoma Valve surgery – implants designed to re-route fluids and regulate their flow. These devices can be effective even in eyes that have failed prior surgery or have complicated glaucoma. This operation is often used when chances for success of routine surgery are low.
- MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) – an array of modern methods and technologies devised to reduce intraocular pressure by improving drainage of aqueous humor out of the eye. MIGS rely on innovative reduced-risk micro surgical designs and solutions. Our specialists at The Eye Center are well versed in a range of MIGS techniques and tools such as: Canaloplasty, KDB, GATT with iTrack catheter and Suture GATT.
- For cases that require intervention to limit excessive fluid accumulation, your surgeon may suggest glaucoma laser treatment to stop fluid production in part of the eye. Transcleral Diode Laser Photocoagulation is one such method used at our clinic. It is a relatively quick procedure. It is often considered for cases that could not be adequately addressed using other approaches or ones requiring additional regulation.
These and other options are available to patients at The Eye Center. For more information about diagnosing, managing and treating glaucoma please get in touch with us for an appointment.
Glaucoma is estimated to affect well over 50 million people worldwide and is deemed the second leading cause of blindness. It can affect people in all age groups, including newborn babies, although the risk for most types of glaucoma tends to increase as we get older.
Please make an effort to keep your regular eye exam appointments to ensure timely detection of eye disease including Glaucoma.
Glaucoma vision loss is not reversible but its progress can be halted very effectively. Early detection enables your eye specialist to better address and work to halt glaucoma vision loss by means of treatment (eye drops, medication) and surgery, where necessary.
