Glaucoma surgeries, such as trabeculectomy or tube shunt implantation, are designed to lower intraocular pressure and preserve vision. However, post-operative care and activity restrictions are critical to prevent pressure spikes, infection, or wound healing problems.
Following glaucoma surgery, you should:
- Avoid any heavy lifting, bending, or straining for at least 2–4 weeks
- Do not rub your eyes
- Avoid swimming or water exposure that could introduce bacteria
- Stay out of dusty environments, which can cause irritation
- Refrain from wearing eye makeup or applying creams near the eye for 2 weeks
Patients may be instructed to sleep with their head elevated or avoid sleeping on the operated side. Driving should be avoided until cleared, and strenuous physical activity including cardio or weight training must be paused for several weeks.
Your eye may feel slightly irritated, watery, or blurry during the initial healing phase. At The Eye Center – Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah & Associates, we monitor your eye pressure closely and guide your medication schedule carefully to support healing.
Follow-up visits are essential, as glaucoma patients may require medication adjustments or minor interventions to maintain long-term success.
