What Kind of Activity Restrictions Should I Observe After Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a safe and common procedure, but post-operative care plays a critical role in ensuring a smooth recovery and excellent visual results. After surgery, patients must follow specific activity restrictions to protect the healing eye.

For the first week after surgery, avoid:

  • Rubbing or pressing the eye
  • Heavy lifting (more than 10 pounds) or bending over, which can increase pressure in the eye
  • Swimming or using hot tubs, due to infection risk
  • Dusty or dirty environments that could cause irritation or infection
  • Driving until cleared by your doctor, especially if your vision is not yet fully stable

It is also important to wear protective glasses or an eye shield, particularly during sleep, to prevent accidental rubbing or trauma.

Patients should not wear eye makeup or use any non-prescribed eye drops. Strenuous exercise and contact sports should be avoided for at least 2–4 weeks, depending on healing progress.
