Chemical splashes to the eye are a medical emergency and require immediate action to minimize damage and preserve vision. Whether its an industrial solvent, household cleaner, or even cosmetic product, your first response can make a crucial difference.
Step 1: Immediately flush your eye with clean, lukewarm water don’t wait. Use an eyewash station, a clean bottle, or even a sink tap. Hold your eyelids open and let the water flow over your eye for at least 15–20 minutes. Avoid rubbing the eye, as this can worsen the irritation.
Step 2: Seek medical attention immediately. Even if the eye seems to feel better after rinsing, chemical injuries can cause internal damage that only a thorough eye exam can detect.
At The Eye Center – Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah & Associates, we handle ocular emergencies promptly and use specialized dyes and slit-lamp exams to evaluate the extent of damage. Treatment may include lubricating drops, antibiotics, corticosteroids, and in severe cases, surgical intervention.
Do not use any drops or ointments without medical advice. Certain chemicals, especially alkali substances (like bleach), can continue damaging tissues long after exposure, making urgent care essential.
