Laser eye treatment called panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) is used in patients who have grown aberrant new blood vessels in the drainage system of the eyeball or in the retina at the rear of the eye.
The PRP laser treatment promotes existing vessels to contract and scar while inhibiting the growth of aberrant new vessels on the retina and in the drainage system of the eyeball. This makes them less likely to bleed into the jelly in the eye ball (vitreous haemorrhage) or to cause a painful type of high pressure within the eye (neovascular glaucoma).
Without this treatment, patients with new blood vessels that have formed in the retina due to either diabetic-related issues (proliferative diabetic retinopathy) or a blocked branch vein run the danger of developing a retinal detachment and maybe losing their vision (branch retinal vein occlusion).
The risk of developing a painful eye due to a blockage of the fluid inside the eyeball brought on by the growth of new blood vessels in the eyeball drainage system exists in patients who have developed new blood vessels in the colored part of the eye (iris) as a result of a blocked vein in the eye (central retinal vein occlusion).
In this case the aim of the treatment is not to prevent loss of vision as there will already be very poor vision that cannot be improved due to the underlying disease. The goal is to stop an accumulation of fluid in the eye from increasing ocular pressure and causing the eye to become uncomfortable.
Laser treatment will significantly lower your chance of vision loss, according to solid scientific evidence. Additionally, it lessens the possibility of painfully high ocular pressure.
The laser treatment can reduce the peripheral (edge) field of vision.You might not notice the effect. However, if both of your eyes require treatment, it may mean you will not be able to meet the legal criterion for having a driving license in terms of vision. If you drive, talk to your doctor about this.
In the eye receiving treatment, your night vision may be compromised, and your color vision may be changed.
Rarely, the treatment may make your vision worse. Macular oedema (a buildup of fluid at the back of the eye), vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding inside the eye), or an unintentional burn to the retina’s center can all be responsible for this. It is possible that this visual loss will last forever.
