The best technique for instilling eye drops involves a few steps to ensure that the medication reaches the eye and is absorbed properly:
- Wash your hands with soap and water before handling the eye drops.
- Shake the eye drop bottle well before using it to ensure the medication is evenly distributed.
- Tilt your head back slightly and use your index finger to gently pull down your lower eyelid.
- Hold the eye drop bottle close to your eye, but not touching it.
- Look up and place one drop of the medication into the pocket formed between your lower eyelid and eye. Be careful not to touch the tip of the bottle to your eye or eyelid to avoid contamination.
- Close your eye gently and press lightly on the inner corner of your eye with your index finger for about 1-2 minutes. This helps prevent the medication from draining into your tear duct and being absorbed by other parts of your body.
- If you need to use multiple eye drops, wait at least 5-10 minutes between each drop to allow the medication to be absorbed properly.
- After you finish, wipe away any excess medication from your eye with a clean tissue.
- Recap the eye drop bottle and store it according to the instructions on the label.
