Scleral buckling, commonly referred to as belt buckling, is a kind of surgery done to fix a detached retina and restore your vision. When the retina, a thin layer of cells visible at the back of the eye, moves away from its normal position, retinal detachment occurs.
The visible white portion of your eye is called the sclera. It serves as a kind of outer wall to safeguard the sensitive internal structures of your eye. In scleral buckling, also known as belt buckling, the surgeon opens the eye before resealing the retina. The surgeon next attaches a material to the sclera, like a plastic, rubber, or sponge, to keep the retina in place. The scleral buckle is implanted permanently in the eye.
The procedure for scleral buckling typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes, and the patient can leave the hospital the same day.
The following medical disorders are treated with scleral buckling such as Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, attached posterior hyaloid detachments due to dialysis and complex retinal detachments.
Myopia (nearsightedness) is one cause that may increase the requirement for scleral buckling surgery. Other eye conditions, such as uveitis (a type of eye inflammation). Diabetes, a retinal detachment family history, previously performed eye operations, such as cataract surgery, age, with retinal detachment more likely in people over the age of 50, a history of eye injury or detachment in one eye.
A retinal detachment may occur spontaneously or as a result of an injury in some cases.
Even while retinal detachment can occur without any pain, it is still regarded as a medical emergency because it might result in irreversible vision loss. The following are some common signs of retinal detachment to look out for: ‘Floaters’ are specks that suddenly appear and hover through your field of vision.
