Pseudoexfoliation syndrome, commonly known as PXF or Exfoliation Syndrome, is a condition in which the body develops little flakes of material resembling dandruff.
The heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, and eye are just a few of the body’s organs that create these tiny protein fiber clusters. However, it has only been demonstrated that this substance is harmful inside the eye, where it raises the risk for glaucoma. Additionally, PXF can exacerbate cataracts and complicate cataract surgery.
This substance may accumulate over time in the drainage angle between the iris and cornea. The optic nerve may be harmed as a result of increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which is measured inside the eye. Pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXF glaucoma) is the medical term for this condition, which can cause blindness.
PXF glaucoma has no noticeable symptoms. Because high intraocular pressure does not cause pain, individuals may gradually lose their vision without realizing it.
The exact cause of PXF is unknown to medical professionals. Most people believe there are environmental reasons (caused by something in the environment)as well as genetic (passed down through generations). PXF is uncommon in adults under 50. This suggests that many eye disorders are caused by aging-related changes in the tissues of the eye.
Anyone can develop pseudoexfoliation (PXF), although those with Northern European ancestry, family relatives with PXF glaucoma, and who are 50 years or older are more likely to do so. Women are also more likely to have PXF.
It is possible, but not proven, that UV light exposure, high altitude, northern latitude and diet may play a role in developing PXF.
No therapy is required if you have PXF until you develop glaucoma. Due to this glaucoma risk, you do need to visit your ophthalmologist at least once a year. Your ophthalmologist may want to visit you more frequently depending on your level of risk.
Your ophthalmologist checks for symptoms of glaucoma during follow-up exams. Attending every exam that is scheduled for you is crucial. You can preserve your vision if your doctor detects glaucoma at an early enough stage.
