Why should I not use tap water to store or rinse my contact lenses?
Many contact lens users are unaware of the consequences of wearing contact lenses while in the shower, swimming, or utilizing a hot tub. Water generally contains many different types of microorganisms that can cause eye infections. In particular, Acanthamoeba, a microorganism is frequently present in tap water, lake water, well water, and other water sources. It can cause a very serious eye infection known as Acanthamoeba keratitis. This condition involves the cornea, the clear, front part of the eye resulting in a very painful infection that is difficult to treat. At times, it can take up to a year or even longer to treat and manage. Moreover, this infection can at times necessitate a corneal transplant or result in blindness.
As a result it is imperative to keep Contact Lenses away from all water. Wearers of contact lenses should take them out before taking a shower, going swimming, or using a hot tub. Additionally, contact lenses should never be cleaned or kept in water. In order to avoid contaminating the lenses with bacteria contained in water, it is also crucial to thoroughly wash and dry hands before handling lenses. To clean contact lens cases, lens solution should be used rather than water.
For those individuals who wish to see clearly without wearing lenses while taking part in water activities, prescription goggles are a viable option. Moreover, other types of vision corrective measures such as laser eye surgery may be considered.
