This specific type of surgery for glaucoma is used to treat several types of glaucoma, including congenital glaucoma, glaucoma that starts after complex or complicated eye surgeries, neovascular glaucoma as well as glaucoma caused by injury or trauma. The procedure is done as day surgery and is performed in the hospital and takes 1 to 2 hours.
The glaucoma surgeon implants a very small tube onto the white part of your eye. The tube is at one end placed inside the eye and the other end is attached to a device that allows it to drain under the tissues of the eye allowing the fluid to eventually find a way back to a patient’s circulation. The tube helps extra fluid drain out of the eye and by doing so it very effectively lowers eye pressure.
The eye does not look visibly different to others after the procedure and the patient can continue to enjoy their vision throughout their lifetime.
