Inflammation or infection of the lid margin is a very common condition. Individuals who may have oily skin are especially prone to this condition, as are children since their hand hygiene cannot always be monitored. Lid margins have lashes which are associated with oil glands. These oil glands produce a special kind of oil important for eye lubrication. Oil is secreted out through tiny openings which may sometimes get blocked.
Treatment involves certain eye drops. Your doctor may even add oral medicines to the regime. Lid hygiene and warm eye compresses are equally important and your doctor will guide you how to achieve this.
In some cases, the blocked gland openings may cause the oily secretion to accumulate within the lid leading to the formation of a firm growth or nodule. This may require surgical removal under local anesthesia. Children may require this procedure to be done under general anesthesia.
Since blepharitis is a condition which can be controlled, but not cured, you may require follow ups over time. It is imperative that you follow the treatment regime and not get discouraged. Eventually the condition gets good control, provided that you comply with the treatment protocol.
