The development of cataracts is characterized by clouding of the eye’s natural lens, frequently a consequence of the aging process. This opacity arises from the aggregation of denatured proteins within the lens, which subsequently impairs vision. Contributing factors beyond aging include extended exposure to ultraviolet radiation, tobacco use, diabetes mellitus, certain pharmaceutical agents (such as corticosteroids), ocular trauma, and a familial predisposition to cataracts.

Following cataract surgery, the original lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), which is not susceptible to clouding, thus preventing the “return” of cataracts. However, a secondary condition known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO) may develop in some individuals months or years following the procedure, presenting symptoms similar to those of the original cataract. PCO results from clouding of the membrane located behind the IOL but is readily treated through a brief, painless laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy, effectively restoring clear vision.
